- Some of the best Nebbiolos you've never heard of
- Great vintage
- Traditionally-styled wines
Scarzello Giorgio e Figli are a tiny producer based in Barolo township in the very heart of the region. When tasting these for the first time, we could not believe we hadn't heard of them, however further research pointed to Scarzello still very much being under the radar. With a mere 5 hectares under vine, plus some of the wines being released well after their peers, it may be no wonder...but those who love traditionally-styled Barolo's are better for it!
This Langhe Nebbiolo - from what is an exceptional vintage in Piedmonte - is compelling. High pitched, enticing aromatics precede a sweetly fruited, admirably succulent palate with has a light dusting of wild herb and hint of amaro. 30% of this wine is from the revered Sarmassa Cru famous for its intense perfume and ageworthiness - and it shows. Delicious now and over the medium term.
Beautiful red fruit, spice and new leather aromatics, then into bright red fruits including plenty of the tasty cherry stuff, freshness and light emery tannin, or perhaps a lick of the old kitten’s tongue. Finish is great. Savoury, yet fruity. Magnificent Langhe Neb, even though it’s really just an early release Barolo, as such.
