Bodegas Exopto Rioja Horizonte de Exopto Blanco 2019

In stock

  • A rare example of white Rioja
  • Mostly Viura then Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, Jaén Blanca, Torrontés
  • Fresh, textured and mineral

“Exopto’s white is a blend of mostly Viura with some 10% Garnacha Blanca and 10% Malvasía Riojana picked predominantly from vines that are co-planted with Exopto’s Tempranillo parcels. The 2019 was wild-fermented in stainless steel and matured in older oak and concrete eggs, as Puyaubert seeks to capture the mineral salinity and tension that is gifted by the rocky limestone soils and old vines in his highland vineyards in Ábalos.

Gutiérrez’s comment below nails it—this new-wave white is at once cool and textured, pithy and saline, aromatically complex and thirst-quenching. Do not miss this.” – Bibendum Wine Co

Tim Atkin MW

“Tom Puyaubert’s delightful white combines Viura with 20% Malvasía and Garnacha Blanca from two vineyards in Ábalos and San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Floral and appealing, it has racy acidity, the concentration of low yields, a hint of oak spice and flavours of pear, lemon and quince.” 92 points, Tim Atkin, 2021 Rioja Report

Luis Gutiérrez

“The 2019 Horizonte de Exopto Blanco, the village white from Ábalos, has an elegant and captivating nose, complex, elegant and nuanced. It’s a blend of 80% Viura, 10% Garnacha Blanca and 10% Malvasía Riojana co-fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured for one year in used 225-liter barrels (20% of the volume), concrete eggs (20%) and the majority in a 4,000-liter French oak foudre, the novelty this vintage, where the fermentations finished. The palate is beautifully textured and fresh, with only 12.5% alcohol and very good acidity, clean, precise and very tasty, with a salty finish.” 93 points, Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate
