  • A rare find - perfectly aged Bordeaux
  • From a vintage rated outstanding by Robert Parker
  • "Delicous and elegant" - Stephen Brook, The Complete Bordeaux

Pomerol is one of the most highly reputed Appellations in Bordeaux and all of France. It is home to some of the world’s finest wines, including Chateau Petrus, Chateau Lafleur and Vieux Château Certan, amongst others.

Chateau Certan-de-May was once part of the above-mentioned Vieux-Chateau-Certan. Often overlooked for its more famous neighbour, this is a wine that punches well above its reputation. Stephen Brook described it as a “very good, and often excellent wine” in his landmark book ‘The Complete Bordeaux’.

Chateau Certan-de-May is sourced from a single parcel of clay-gravel soils, from 50 year old vines (at the time of vintage). The vineyard is composed of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and this is broadly reflected in the blend of the end wine. Grapes are hand-picked and after vinification in tank the wine rests in 70% new oak for 18 months.

Whilst the 2006 was deep, dark-fruited and had pronounced brooding tannins upon release, after 15 years – and in the middle of most critics’ recommended drinking windows – the wine has evolved into a more rounded, elegant Bordeaux. The cherry, plum and truffle notes are still very evident, but maturation has added cedar and leather into the mix, all with much more integration and with resolved tannins that support rather than dominate the wine. Perfect for current drinking, this wine will cellar well for at least another 5 years.

Robert Parker

This property is finally hitting on full cylinders and has returned to the form it had in the late 1970s and mid-1980s. This is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine with notes of graphite, menthol, licorice, and truffle. The fruit character verges between black cherry and creme de cassis notes. The wine exhibits noble and complex aromatics, moderately high tannins, but a full-bodied, firm, muscular structure that will require some patience. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028.

Stephen Tanzer

Full, deep red-ruby. Sexy aromas of roasted raspberry, plum liqueur, coffee, smoke, mocha and chocolate. Enticing and exotic Pomerol, with lush flavors of roasted plum and musky coffee leavened by a medicinal reserve. In spite of its enticing sweetness and fullness, this is rather backward today, with the dusty, substantial tannins calling for at least a few years of patience. But the wine’s firm backbone and excellent breadth and length suggest it should age well.
– Vinous, 2009

Once part of the original Certan estate, 2006 is another overlooked vintage. It’s full of black plum and hedgerow scents, while the palate is poised – clean as a whistle with a mineral-rich finish.
