La Spinona Barbaresco Secondine 2017

In stock

  • From an one hundred year old estate
  • Sustainably farmed
  • Extraordinary balance, ready to drink now, but with many years of development ahead

First produced in 2016, and sourced from their 3 hectare holdings in the south-facing Secondine Cru, the source vines for the wine average 70 years old. The other major owner of Secondine vineyards is Angelo Gaja, with the San Lorenzo cuvee sourced from this fruit.
La Spinona’s organically grown grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and then given a day’s pre-fermentation cold soak. Fermentation occurs over 8/10 days, with automatic punching down over the first few and pumping over at key stages in the process. This is followed by 9 months elevage in 15 year old 2500 litre barrels and a further 12 months aging in bottle before release.
Showing ruby-garnet in the glass, and showing lifted cherry and liquorice aromas, this wine shows an exceptionally open palate of dried cherry, raspberry, liquorice and all spice, supported by beautifully refined nebbiolo-fruit tannins, all playing out over an incredibly long finish. Ready to drink now, this wine also has many years of development ahead.

James Suckling

Interesting nose with spicy mixed berries, oyster shell, goji berries and some heather. Full, round and flavorful with quite firm tannins that need a little time to meld into the wine a little better. Nice old-vine quality to this. Give it a year. Try in 2022
