  • Brothers Arturo and Kike de Miguel (ARTU-KE → Artuke) are at the forefront of the new Rioja movement, focusing on village wines and vineyard specificity rather than the traditional crianza/reserva hierarchy. Pies Negros comes from organic, high-altitude vineyards in Ábalos and Baños de Ebro, where limestone soils and cooler nights bring lift and clarity. Fermented with native yeasts and a proportion of whole bunches, it’s aged in older French oak to keep the emphasis on fruit purity. The 2023 is supple and energetic, showing red and black berries, gentle florals, spice and fine chalky tannins. It’s a vibrant, modern Rioja that captures the brothers’ philosophy of transparency, precision and a Burgundian mindset applied to Tempranillo.

  • "The dark and serious 2023 Pies Negros is a village red from Ábalos produced with Tempranillo and 15% Graciano, which seems to have given it a serious twist with deep dark fruit aromas and very good freshness. The destemmed but uncrushed grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 500-liter barrels for one year, save for 10% of the volume that was kept in concrete. It has contained ripeness and good freshness and balance, and it's juicy and tasty, with fine tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. Serious is the word. 65,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2024." 93 points Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous.com
