Thirty years ago, Angelo Gaja left his beloved Barbaresco for a little-known stretch of the Tuscan coast. Bolgheri had fewer than ten wineries then, and the land took almost two years of negotiation to buy, which is how Ca’ Marcanda, the “house of endless negotiations”, got its name. Three decades later, it is one of the finest addresses in Italian wine.
Now the family is looking somewhere new again: the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, where Idda, their partnership with the Graci family, is crafting wines of place with real energy and character.
