“At its best, Beaujolais offers some of the most thrilling, transparent expressions of terroir in France.” -Jancis Robinson MW
“The best Beaujolais crus can age as gracefully as many Burgundies—and often at a fraction of the price.”- Clive Coates MW
Beaujolais ranks as one of the most exciting and progressive wine regions in the world today. Fine wine consumers have now acknowledged this resurgence in quality through insatiable demand. The Gamay grape's inherent expressive qualities when handled properly, combined with a new generation of artisan winemakers has lead to a sharp rise in overall quality and increasingly a multitude of world class wines.
This will be an exploration of some of the most well known Crus (villages) in Beaujolais, and what differentiates them, by tasting wines from some of the regions most highly regarded and exciting vignerons. Vine age, site and winemaking ethos are all important in shaping the finished wine and when handled carefully the results can be breathtaking, and certainly more wallet-friendly than the wines from their northern cousins.
What’s more, the best examples of Cru Beaujolais have the ability to age and improve a lot longer than many think. All this and more to be covered over the course of the evening.
